Shoe Bomber Sentence
|
| |
|
Remember the
guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and tried to
light it?
Did you know his trial is over? Did you know he was sentenced? Did you see/hear any
of the judge's comments on TV or Radio? Didn't think so.!!!
Everyone should hear what the judge had to say.
Ruling by
Judge William Young, US District Court.
Prior to sentencing,
the Judge asked the defendant if he had anything to say His response:
After admitting his guilt to the court for the record, Reid also
admitted his 'allegiance to Osama bin Laden, to Islam, and to the
religion of Allah,' defiantly stating, 'I think I will not apologize for
my actions,' and told the court 'I am at war with your country.'
Judge Young then delivered the statement quoted below:
Judge
Young: 'Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court
imposes upon you.
On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to
life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General. On
counts 2, 3, 4 and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on
each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutively. (That's 80
years.)
On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30
years again, to be served consecutively to the 80 years just imposed.
The Court imposes upon you for each of the eight counts a fine of
$250,000 that's an aggregate fine of $2 million. The Court accepts the
government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders
restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to
American Airlines.
The Court imposes upon you an $800 special
assessment. The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release
simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life
sentences so I need go no further.
This is the sentence that is
provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and just sentence. It is a
righteous sentence.
Now, let me explain this to you. We are not
afraid of you or any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are
Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is too much war
talk here and I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in
this court, we deal with individuals as individuals and care for
individuals as individuals. As human beings, we reach out for justice.
You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a
soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to
call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. Whether the officers
of government do it or your attorney does it, or if you think you are a
soldier, you are not-----, you are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate
with terrorists. We do not meet with terrorists. We do not sign
documents with terrorists. We hunt them down one by one and bring them
to justice.
So war talk is way out of line in this court You are
a big fellow. But you are not that big. You're no warrior. I've known
warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal that is guilty of
multiple attempted murders. In a very real sense, State Trooper Santiago
had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody
and you wondered where the press and the TV crews were, and he said:
'You're no big deal.'
You are no big deal.
What your able
counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled
with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is
why you did something so horrific. What was it that led you here to this
courtroom today?
I have listened respectfully to what you have to
say. And I ask you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of
unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty and admit you are
guilty of doing? And, I have an answer for you. It may not satisfy you,
but as I search this entire record, it comes as close to understanding
as I know.
It seems to me you hate the one thing that to us is
most precious. You hate our freedom. Our individual freedom. Our
individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, to
believe or not believe as we individually choose. Here, in this society,
the very wind carries freedom. It carries it everywhere from sea to
shining sea. It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you
are here in this beautiful courtroom, so that everyone can see, truly
see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely.
It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on
your behalf, have filed appeals, will go on in their representation of
you before other judges.
We Americans are all about freedom.
Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure
of our own liberties. Make no mistake though. It is yet true that we
will bear any burden; pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. Look
around this courtroom. Mark it well. The world is not going to long
remember what you or I say here. The day after tomorrow, it will be
forgotten, but this, however, will long endure.
Here in this
courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the American people will
gather to see that justice, individual justice, justice, not war,
individual justice is in fact being done. The very President of the
United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and
lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged and juries of
citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically, to
mold and shape and refine our sense of justice.
See that flag,
Mr. Reid? That's the flag of the United States of America. That flag
will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for
freedom. And it always will.
Mr. Custody Officer. Stand him down.
So, how much of this Judge's comments did we hear on our TV
sets? We need more judges like Judge Young. Pass this around. Everyone
should and needs to hear what this fine judge had to say. Powerful words
that strike home.
Please SEND this----so that everyone has a
chance to read it. |

Peer accuses Government of major transfer of sovereignty after it confirms that the UK cannot withdraw from European Investigation Order ‘directive’
|

THE PRESS OFFICE OF
The Lord Stoddart of
Swindon
(Independent Labour)
News Release
14th October 2010
Peer accuses
Government of major transfer of sovereignty after it confirms that the
UK cannot withdraw from European Investigation Order 'directive'
In response to a written question from the independent Labour Peer, Lord
Stoddart of Swindon (11th October), the Government has admitted that
Britain's participation in the European Investigation Order (EIO), when
it gets under way, is a permanent arrangement. Baroness
Neville-Jones, for the Government said: 'The European
Investigation Order is not an agreement between national Governments but
a draft directive of the European Union.
Consequently, as and when agreed, the United Kingdom will be unable to
withdraw from the directive.'
Lord Stoddart, commenting on the Government's response, was forthright
in his criticism: 'Replies to written questions from
Parliamentarians are supposed to be supplied within ten working days,
this response has taken closer to ten weeks and when I do eventually
receive it, the Government confirms that the door has been opened for
foreign police forces to be given access to confidential information
about British citizens, in perpetuity.
Police forces in this country will be compelled to provide details of
people's personal affairs, including bank accounts without their
knowledge or consent. Furthermore, our officers will have to
carry out investigations and surveillance at the behest of other EU
countries. The Government has over-ridden Parliament so that there
has been no discussion in either House on a directive with very serious
implications for the British people. So much for Parliamentary
sovereignty!
"This is without doubt a major transfer of sovereignty. What
happened to the pre-election promises that any major transfer of
sovereignty would be subject to a referendum of the British people?
I am disappointed to find that this new Government is as slippery and
dishonest about matters EU as the last one. No Government of
whatever colour should be signing us up to this iniquitous directive."
The full text of Lord Stoddart's question and the Government's response
is below:
EU: European
Investigation Order
Hansard 11.10.10
Question Asked by Lord
Stoddart of Swindon
To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the answer by Baroness
Neville-Jones on 27 July (Official Report, col. 1235) that the European
Investigation Order is based on an agreement between national
Governments, whether the United Kingdom can withdraw from the agreement
at any time.
[HL1916]
The Minister of State, Home Office (Baroness Neville-Jones): My answer,
to which you refer, states that, "This is mutual legal assistance
between national legal regimes".
The European Investigation Order is not an agreement between national
Governments but a draft directive of the European Union. Consequently,
as and when agreed, the United Kingdom will be unable to withdraw from
the directive.

UKIP Leadership candidates to battle it out in Peterborough as the campaign moves to the East of England
|
|
|
|
The increasingly hard fought campaign for the Leadership of the UK Independence Party moves to the East of England on Sunday (10th October) with a hustings meeting in Peterborough featuring all four of the candidates. Party members will be given a chance to hear about the candidates’ Leadership ambitions and put their questions to them, at the Orton Hall Hotel, The Village, Orton Longueville, Peterborough, PE2 7DN, starting at 1.00pm.
The Leadership contest is of special interest for east of England UKIP members as their MEP, David Campbell Bannerman, currently the Party’s Deputy Leader and Head of Policy, is one of the contenders. However, he faces strong competition from former Leader Nigel Farage who is the Party’s most well-known and respected politician, from Tim Congdon, an economist who was an adviser to Margaret Thatcher and from former boxer and enthusiastic promoter of sport for young people, Winston McKenzie.
Further information on the candidates can be found at the following link:
http://www.ukip.org/page/leadership-contenders
There will be a ballot of all current UKIP members to decide the winner of the contest, with the result being announced on 5th November 2010.

UK Households pay more than £500 a year to be EU members
|
|
|
|
More news from the Daily Telegraph ... in today's paper the Telegraph reports on new figures showing that the average British household paid £518 to be a member of the EU last year, but received only £367 back in direct benefits.
The £150 loss for every household is because Britain's share of the costs for running the EU are not matched by returned cash, which comes in the form of farm subsidies or social funds.
The paper sys the data shows that the lion's share of spending goes to continental farmers and poorer countries such as Poland. |

If the CAP doesn't fit,
take it off!
In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Norfolk farmer and
UKIP MEP, Stuart Agnew today suggested that plans for the future of the
EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are likely to "hinder" farmers
rather than help them.
Speaking during a debate on a report about the future of the CAP, Mr
Agnew pointed out that the plans would divert money away from working
farmers and accused the EU of being obsessed with climate change,
leading to nonsensical CO2 reduction measures being proposed. "The
report's obsession with climate change could lead to the acceptance of
advice that obliges arable farmers to pump tractor exhaust under the
ground, increasing fuel consumption and spoiling seed beds as a
consequence."
Commenting after the debate, Mr Agnew said:"There is no good reason to
have the CAP, but if we are compelled to have it, let its focus be on
supporting farmers, not on politically correct, pseudo-scientific
scares.
"Injecting tractor exhaust fumes underground, and changing ruminant
livestock feed to reduce methane emissions will only hinder farmers. At
a difficult time for farming, the EU is seeking to increase farming
costs, while the likely effect will be to reduce crop yields.
"If the CAP fits, we should wear it. The corollary is that if the CAP
doesn't fit, we should take it off!"
I declare an interest as a working farmer.
Plans for the future of the CAP have to work at a practical level and
they must be affordable.
The military have a phrase: "no names, no pack drill" but a member of
the EPP voted against this report in committee. This can only be because
in today's financial climate, cost is a worry and the report's
enthusiasm for non-agricultural objectives, under pillar 2, diverts
funds away from farmers.
The report's obsession with climate change could lead to accepting
advice that obliges arable farmers to pump tractor exhaust under the
ground, increasing fuel consumption and spoiling seed beds as a
consequence.
My own experience of witnessing contractors attempts to inject dirty
water under the ground, to satisfy EU rules tells me what problems lie
ahead. Ruminant livestock farmers may be required to reduce methane
emissions by replacing hay and silage with more expensive cereal based
rations.
If there has to be a CAP, let it assist farmers, not hinder them. |

Europeans claim UK
benefits from abroad British taxpayers are paying out
benefits to disabled East European immigrants who have returned home.
Last year more than £5m in UK Disability Living Allowance was sent
abroad to 2,000 foreigners.
UKIP’s joint deputy leader David Campbell Bannerman said the figures
prove how corrupt the British benefits system is. “We know there is a
huge amount of fraud in the system which the Government is trying to
deal with. But the only people free from accountability are those,
mostly former migrants, who have left these shores and receive these
benefits abroad.”
Migrants who move to Britain from EU countries are entitled to claim up
to £126 a week after just two years as a resident. And despite George
Osborne’s pledges to crack down on fraudulent disability benefits
claimants, the government will not be able to check up on those who do
not live in the UK.
Matthew Elliott, from the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Taxpayers will be
fuming that we’re forking out for migrants who are back in their own
countries. If they have returned then they are the responsibility of
their home countries.” |

| EU move
on EGGS is 'BONKERS' A proposed EU ban on selling eggs by
the dozen was today described by UKIP as "bonkers".
Britain has been exempt from EU regulations that ban selling goods by
number. But last week MEPs voted to end this country's deal despite
objections from UK members.
Instead of packaging telling shoppers that a box contains six eggs the
new rules mean that it will instead show the weight in grams of the eggs
inside, explained UKIP MEP Paul Nuttall.
The rules apply to other food stuffs traditionally sold by quantity,
such as bread rolls and fruit and the rules do not allow both weight and
quantity to be displayed.
"This is plain bonkers," said Mr Nuttall, MEP for the North West.
"When the French stop selling their wine by the case we'll be happy to
stop selling eggs by the dozen," he said.
"And I am also very concerned that the extra cost of changes to
packaging and labelling, as well as weighing, will be passed onto
shoppers through higher grocery bills.
"The idiot bureaucrats who have dreamed this nonsense up say it will
help consumers make an informed choice when buying food. That is rubbish
- British shoppers want to buy items the way they always have not the
way dictated by a faceless pen pusher in Brussels," said Mr Nuttall.
"This regulation has to be further debated by the European Parliament
and you can be very sure that UKIP will be voting against it." |

GOVERNMENT CONFIRMS BRITAIN'S LIABILITY FOR
EMERGENCY FUNDING OF BAIL OUTS FOR EUROZONE COUNTRIES News Release
from the Press Office of
The Lord Stoddart of Swindon
Contact: Stuart Gulleford 07734-457390 :
11th June 2010
In response to a written question by the Independent Labour Peer, Lord
Stoddart of Swindon, the Government has confirmed that Britain will not
be participating in the European Financial Stabilisation mechanism, the
€500 billion (£413 billion) fund set up to support eurozone member
states. The majority of the funding will come from eurozone member
states. However, the Government has also confirmed that €60 billion
(£49.56 billion) of the total mechanism budget will be 'emergency
finance' raised by the EU in the form of loans and in the event of a
default on any loan, Britain would be underwriting approximately 13.6%
or €8 billion (£6.6 billion) of the cost.
Lord Stoddart said: "Since the eurozone seems to be heading for a major
meltdown, it seems highly likely that both the main fund and the
emergency finance will be needed. In the event of the latter, it is just
as likely that there will be a default and the British taxpayer will be
asked to help bail out eurozone members. No political party has ever
sought a mandate for this and, in the final analysis, in cannot be
either justified or afforded." Ends
The full text of Lord Stoddart of Swindon's question and the
Government's reply is as follows:
EU: Financial Assistance to Member States

countries which
are experiencing
financial and
economic
problems; and,
if so, how.

Lord Sassoon
(Commercial
Secretary, HM

finance
Ministers at an
extraordinary
meeting of the
ECOFIN
Council on 9 May
agreed to
establish a
European
financial
stabilisation
mechanism to
support
euro-area member
states,
totalling €500
billion.
Up to
€440
billion of the
sum would be
provided by
euro-area member
states (and
others who
choose to
participate)
through a
special purpose
vehicle.
The UK has
chosen not to
participate in
the special

and will not
make
contributions;
and there is,
therefore, no
question of any
liability
arising to the
UK.
Up to
€60
billion of
emergency
finance could be
provided in
accordance with
Article 122(2)
of the Lisbon
treaty. Should
this element of
the mechanism be
called upon, the
European

Loans would be
granted in

would be subject
to policy
conditionality.
Only where there
were defaults on
loan repayments
would there be a

budget.

Fury as Ken Clarke wants fewer criminals jailed
Thousands of offenders could be walking the streets in a U-turn on David
Cameron’s tough-on-crime promises in a desperate bid to save money - if
Ken Clarke has his way.
The Government is proposing a radical reform of prison policy to save
£2.2billion by sending fewer offenders to jail and cutting sentences, it
emerged yesterday.
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/180874/Fury-as-Ken-Clarke-wants-fewer-criminals-jailed
We say:
The electorate should feel very angry about this latest of U-turns by
the ConDem coalition.
The tories promised to be tougher on crime before the election, as soon
as they get elected, they do what they do best – and perform a U-turn.
Whether this back-tracking is down to the yellow Lib Dems, or just the
fact the tories have a habit of u-turns, (the Lisbon treaty referendum
for example) it is further evidence that they cannot be trusted to
deliver on their promises.
UKIP are the only party that would add MORE prison places not less.
If anyone deserves preferential treatment, it’s the electorate, not the
criminal. |
